Historic Landmark Burns! Beck's "Original" Calabash Restaurant.

How sad to find out one of our favorite restaurants was ravaged by a fire!!

Beck’s "Original" Calabash Restaurant, a 72-year-old historic landmark in Calabash, NC  has burned in a fire that started on Monday evening @ 10:10 pm, about an hour after the restaurant closed for the night.

"Numerous fire departments and emergency units in the area provided mutual aid at the scene, where firefighters remained all night" said Calabash Assistant Fire Chief Jim Bruno. Bruno estimated they had the fire under control in about an hour.

Honey Shore, public information officer for the Calabash Fire Department  said firefighters worked to protect the adjacent Grapevine Restaurant from any collateral damages as the fire ensued.

Shawn Bellamy, the owner of Beck's heard about the subsequent fire after an employee with Ella’s, another restaurant owned and operated by the family just down the road, called her husband, Corey.

“Investigators feel it was something electrical in the attic that caused the fire to start”, said Shawn Bellamy.

Bellamy’s family has owned Beck's since August 2004. Beck’s had originally been owned by Vester and Ruth Beck, an aunt of Bellamy’s mom, Sheryl Hardee, a longtime Calabash restaurateur who passed away in 2007.

While being interviewed Shawn Bellamy said, "The middle portion of the family-owned restaurant dates back to 1940, with some additions along the way". Bellamy plans to rebuild Beck's as soon as possible.

Frank and Karen,

What a shame. I'm glad to see the owner is going to bring it back soon. Better than ever, I suspect.

Rich ~> This is a famous landmark that Jimmy Durante referred to on his radio show ...

Durante's radio show was bracketed with two trademarks: "Inka Dinka Doo" as his opening theme, and the invariable signoff that became another familiar national catchphrase: "Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." For years Durante preferred to keep the mystery alive.

One theory was that it referred to the owner of a restaurant in Calabash, North Carolina, where Durante and his troupe had stopped to eat. He was so taken by the food, the service, and the chitchat he told the owner that he would make her famous. Since he did not know her name, he referred to her as "Mrs. Calabash".

Thats a bummer to say the least. My son's friends house burnt down 2 years ago and they are finally getting around to knocking it down. No fire damage is plesant.

Ellen ~> You are so right. Fire damage takes a while to recovery from. Hopefully Beck's will be built up quickly.

Frank and Karen so sad to see a local icon destroyed.   I hope it will be even better when it is rebuilt.

Jennifer ~ This historic landmark restaurant is a fovorite to many and will be sadly missed until it is rebuilt. Your fall foliage pictures from your area have been spectacular. Thanks!
