Historic Landmark Burns! Beck's "Original" Calabash Restaurant.
How sad to find out one of our favorite restaurants was ravaged by a fire!!
Beck’s "Original" Calabash Restaurant, a 72-year-old historic landmark in Calabash, NC has burned in a fire that started on Monday evening @ 10:10 pm, about an hour after the restaurant closed for the night.
"Numerous fire departments and emergency units in the area provided mutual aid at the scene, where firefighters remained all night" said Calabash Assistant Fire Chief Jim Bruno. Bruno estimated they had the fire under control in about an hour.
Honey Shore, public information officer for the Calabash Fire Department said firefighters worked to protect the adjacent Grapevine Restaurant from any collateral damages as the fire ensued.
Shawn Bellamy, the owner of Beck's heard about the subsequent fire after an employee with Ella’s, another restaurant owned and operated by the family just down the road, called her husband, Corey.
“Investigators feel it was something electrical in the attic that caused the fire to start”, said Shawn Bellamy.
Bellamy’s family has owned Beck's since August 2004. Beck’s had originally been owned by Vester and Ruth Beck, an aunt of Bellamy’s mom, Sheryl Hardee, a longtime Calabash restaurateur who passed away in 2007.
While being interviewed Shawn Bellamy said, "The middle portion of the family-owned restaurant dates back to 1940, with some additions along the way". Bellamy plans to rebuild Beck's as soon as possible.
